The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk

Recently, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk announced its collection of more than 70 stores and restaurants, which includes Last Call Studio by Neiman Marcus, Coach Factory On Sale and Forever 21. Now undergoing a $70 million renovation that will expand its footprint by 50,000 square feet, the Riverwalk is the first outlet center in a downtown area and is slated to open in late spring or early summer 2014.

Retailers include Aerosoles, American Eagle, Cafe du Monde, Charlotte Russe, Chico’s, Clarks, Crocs, Guess, Hartstrings Childrenswear, Kay Jewelers, New Balance, Gap, Raising Cane’s, Red Mango, Steve Madden, Sunglass Warehouse and Tommy Bahama. The mall is 94 percent leased.

Mark Bulmash, senior vice president of development for the Howard Hughes Corporation, says this reflects a heightened national interest in New Orleans. “The city is on its way back,” Bulmash says. “It took us two and a half years to get the retailers to understand the opportunity here. Early on, it was like, ‘Why New Orleans?’ Now it is ‘Why not New Orleans?’ There is a newfound excitement for the city.”

“The caliber of retailers shows that downtown New Orleans has national appeal as a place to live, work and do business,” says Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer. “The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk is an exciting addition to District C and the entire city.”

With retail developments including Tiffany & Co. opening at The Shops at Canal Place and H&M opening in the French Quarter this fall, Bulmash and Canada foresee downtown re-emerging as a major shopping destination, recalling the days when women donned hats and white gloves to visit Canal Street department stores like Godchaux’s, Maison Blanche and D.H. Holmes.

ReNEW Schools Future Takes Flight Fundraiser

ReNEW Schools Future Takes Flight Fundraiser

For the over 3,200 ReNEW students across the city, college is on their minds. The students set their sights on earning college diplomas by participating in end-of-year college-focused field studies sponsored by ReNEW. The goal of the field studies is to expand the students’ scope of opportunities post-graduation. On college visits across the county, students will partake in admissions sessions, meet with financial aid officers, tour dorm rooms, and grasp firsthand that college is more than an idea; rather it is a real, tangible opportunity for the future.

Understanding that the majority of ReNEW’s students have never traveled outside the city of New Orleans, these field studies grant a tremendous opportunity for students to have a truly extraordinary learning experience.  This year, ReNEW is hosting its 2nd annual Future Takes Flight fundraiser to benefit these college visits and field studies. This event will be held in the auditorium of ReNEW Cultural Arts Academy on October 4, 2013 from 7:00-10:00pm.

This year’s event highlights include:

  • Handcrafted Cocktails and Spirits by Grey Goose vodka, Bombay Sapphire, Dewar’s and Bacardi, and beer provided by Abita
  • Live music by Jayna Morgan & the Sazerac Sunrise Jazz Band, played on the Blue Dog Steinway painted by George Rodrigue
  • More than $12,000 worth of exciting items for silent auction
  • Commissioned, one-of-a-kind artwork from Terrance Osborne, Richard Thomas,  Jerome Ford and other internationally acclaimed artists

Dalai Lama in New Orleans

The 14th Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists exiled in Dharamsala, India, will be making his first visit to New Orleans this week. He will address the public in two sold-out talks at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and UNO Lakefront Arena. He also will address students during the 2013 Tulane University commencement ceremony and the “Resilience: Strength Through Compassion and Connection” academic conference.

Professor Ron Marks with Tulane University’s School of Social Work, who established the Louisiana Himalaya Connection, coordinated the visit on one of his annual trips to Dharamsala with his graduate students. Students at the School of Social Work provide service through more than 75 local organizations, including schools, hospitals, post-Katrina assistance programs, and in Plaquemines Parish following the BP oil disaster.

Tibet has remained under Chinese control since 1950, following generations of political turmoil. In 1959, the Dalai Lama established the Tibetan government in exile, which remains in Dharamsala. The Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his efforts to liberate Tibet.

There are tons of public events planned in recognition of the Dalai Lama’s visit, including the creation of a sand mandala, a large colored-sand painting made over four days. On May 17, a procession will bring the mandala to the Mississippi River, where it will be ceremoniously dispersed.
